The Twilight Zone – The Movie DVD $19.97 In The Twilight Zone The Movie DVD you’ll see how some of Hollywood’s top directors handle some classic stories from the legendary sci-fi series. In The Twilight Zone the Movie video, Landis opens with an amusing nod to the original series’ pop-culture appeal with Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks riffing on their favorite episodes before a hair-raising shock finale; unfortunately, his second offering is a bland morality plan about racial tolerance that will forever be overshadowed by the accident that claimed the lives of star Vic Morrow and two child actors during shooting. In the Twilight Zone The Movie DVD, part of the collection of Syfy DVDs, Spielberg’s take on George Clayton Johnson’s “Kick the Can” looks lovely and is well performed by its cast (especially Scatman Crothers), but it struggles to bear up under the weight of treacly sentiment so common to the director’s films at the time. Dante’s version of Jerome Bixby’s “It’s A Good Life” (about a boy with monstrous powers) is rife with his trademark energy and black humor (and his cast of regular players, including Kevin McCarthy and William Schallert, strike the right balance of terror and comedy). But it’s Miller’s revamp of Richard Matheson’s legendary “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” that delivers the biggest payoff, thanks to John Lithgow’s super-charged turn as a nervous airline passenger who’s convinced he’s seen a monster tampering with the plane’s wing. Burgess Meredith (himself a veteran of the original TZ) provides narration. This 1978 movie was released theatrically and has a fantastic plot, impressive special effects (that still look good!) and inspired acting. Adama suspects that the Cylons are plotting against the humans and advises the council members to be careful however Baltar (played by the brilliant John Colicos ) architect of the peace between the Cylons and humanity, reassures the council that Adama is wrong. The Cylons attack one of Galactica’s patrols, first killing Adama’s youngest son and then turn their attention to the fleet. Only Galactica is in any position of defending itself and the entire fleet, apart from Galactica is destroyed. After destroying the fleet, the Cylons turn their attentions to the twelve colonies with the ambition of wiping mankind from the galaxy. Following the attack, Galactica visits Caprica and takes on survivors from the battle, it sends out a signal for all human vessels to converge on Galactica and the survivors from the colonies form a convoy that seeks out the home of the mythical planet referred to in religious texts as the thirteenth colony – a world known to it’s inhabitants as Earth. Heading off on their journey, the human fleet comes across a planet where they hope to take on supplies. The planet seems very friendly but something just doesn’t seem right. The fleet’s top pilots – Apollo ( Richard Hatch ) and Starbuck ( Dirk Benedict ) are sent down to investigate. A great opener to the series and an action packed tale with some excellent effects. Look out for Jane Seymour who briefly appeared in the series as Apollo’s love interest and for the brilliant Dirk Benedict who proves here that he has what it takes to be the coolest cat on the block. Another film was released that year that was going to change the comedy landscape for years to come – that film was Scary Movie . A fresh, funny and generally entertaining spin on the horror genre, Scary Movie launched a franchise and inspired a resurgence in the spoof movie genre, left wanting since the days of Leslie Nielsen and The Naked Gun Trilogy . Written by two of the six writers of Scary Movie, we now have Epic Movie, a film that in many ways attempts to recapture the feel of the original Scary Movie however never quite manages to do so. While Scary Movie spoofed horrors and Date Movie spoofed romantic comedies; Epic Movie has gone one step further and has spoofed literally everything… not just the Hollywood epics but films as diverse as Harold and Kumar , The Da Vinci Code and even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This does much to keep the laughs coming thick and fast… that said however, ultimately by spoofing so many films (and not just concentrating on one particular movie as Scary Movie did with Scream ); this also has the undesired effect of being a somewhat disjointed affair.
